» klaus & cecilia : promises of wonders (a hybrids ficlet)

(a/n: the familiar klaus quote from 3x11 is an intentional parallel that will be explored further at a later time.)The squeak of the rusted hinges as the wooden door swung open made Cecilia look up from the empty vial she was drying with a cloth. Though she could not make out more than a silhouette of the visitor as only a few candles lit up the dark room, the sound of his footfalls were instantly recognizable like an unspoken memory she held closely to her heart.“Where is your mother?” he asked quietly as he closed the distance between them with a few quick strides. When he reached her, she could feel his arms slip around her small waist and her grasp on the crystal loosened.
As she set it down gently onto the slightly damp grain of the table, Cecilia turned slightly so that she could face him and let out a small gasp when she discovered how close his face was to hers. “The tavern to collect some things from a trader,” she whispered, feeling his breath coast along her cheek. Before she could protest, his lips met hers in a soft kiss and she sunk into his warmth. She found herself wishing the moment could last an eternity when he pulled away to offer her a smirk.
“I know it is late, but I had to see you.” Gingerly, he traced the slope of her neck before lifting her chin so that he could kiss her again.
“Niklaus,” she whispered with a giggle, lifting a hand to run her slender fingers through the golden curls of his hair. “Surely, she will catch you one of these times.”
He feigned an injured look and clutched at his heart, the fabric of his shirt rough between his fingers. “You wound me, sweetheart. I would think that, by now, you might harbour some confidence for me and my devious ways.” Klaus watched for her reaction before raising his eyebrows and chuckling at her expression. “But save your doubts for another day, since I cannot stay long anyway. I am to watch the wolves transform tonight.”
Cecilia’s eyes widened momentarily before feeling rather cross with him. “And that is supposed to instil some sort of assurance within me?” she questioned, wanting to pull away from him, although his tight grasp restricted her from getting very far. Instead, she chose to look away, breaking their gaze. “Have you forgotten that is how Henrick died?”
Sensing her body stiffen, he lifted a hand to brush the hair out of her eyes, coaxing her to look at him again. “Celia,” he murmured, the pad of his thumb moving back and forth along her cheekbone. “I will never forget, but the transformation, in all of its supernatural glory, is something I must witness and understand if I am to follow suit one day. Once you and I become immortal, there will be even more things of wonder to discover, my love.” When her green eyes found his blue ones again, he spoke once more. “There is a whole world out there waiting for us, Cecilia; a world with endless art and music… and genuine beauty, to match that which you possess. There is no need to be afraid.”
“How can you be so sure, Niklaus?” she asked, searching his expression for any hints of doubt or fear.
“Because I know that together we are something that surpasses the realm of magic and the boundaries of nightwalkers and creatures of the moon. We will be invincible.”
“Just promise me one thing,” Cecilia whispered as she enveloped his face in her hands. “Be safe, my darling. I do not know that I could go on in life if I were to ever lose you.”
He leaned in to place one final kiss on her lips before stepping back and walking towards the door, his gaze never wavering. “Do not worry, my love. That is something I would never let happen to us. We will be together forever.”
“Forever,” she echoed, and then he was gone.
